With dedication and patience, anyone can successfully create their own boomerang woodworking with stunning results. This can be done by simply throwing some grass into the air just as you would do when about to fly an RC plane. Right handed throwers should have the wind hitting their left cheek and left handed throwers should feel the wind on their right cheek. If this is a little confusing, you could note which side is which on the boomerang itself by using a pencil. You can always sand the writing off later or paint over it.

PRECESSION A boomerang is thrown at a slight outward tilt from vertical. The top wing rotates with the object's forward motion, so it moves faster than the bottom wing, generating more lift. Because the boom­erang is spinning, the lift exerts a steady force that is felt 90 degrees later, at the point in each rotation farthest from the thrower. A classic banana-shaped boomerang is simply two wings joined together in a single unit. Palm sanders and orbital sanders work well for this, however it can take some time. The machine in the picture is my favorite machine to use for this. It has a gage for the angles and takes material of quickly but not so fast that you take off to much.

If the boomerangs’ flight is not optimal, it may require some adjustments. This can include tweaking its design, adjusting weight distribution, or adding more curvature to the wings. Making these adjustments will ensure that your boomerang achieves a proper return when thrown.

Step 6: How Do I Shape the Edges?

If you are right handed, mark the right edge of every wing/blade of the boomerang, and vice versa if you are left handed. This is the edge that you will be tapering to create the wing shape. First let's consider how a primitive hunter might have come up with a non-returning boomerang. We know that at some point people started using the rocks and sticks they found around them as crude tools. One very early invention was the club, which is just a stick that you hit something or somebody with.

On the ends and middle you will have to blend the two edges together. No special technique for doing this just sand everything smooth. Making a wooden boomerang involves carefully selecting the right type of wood, and then shaping and carving it to the desired design. Carefully make relief cuts around your pattern and cut it out. I used a jig saw for this but a scroll saw and band saw work well also. If you are skill with any of these tools you can cut some of the bevels for the edges. I recommend a jigsaw and anything that can be used for sanding.
